Global Entrepreneurship Monitor 2006 Wales Executive Report

6th Mar 2007

Enterprise education can make a real difference to increasing entrepreneurial activity in Wales.

Entrepreneurial activity within Wales has remained constant whilst falling in most other UK regions. That is the message from the publication today of the Global Entrepreneurship Monitor (GEM), a major research project undertaken by the National Entrepreneurship Observatory (NEO) for Wales at Cardiff University and the University of Glamorgan, and supported by the Welsh Assembly Government and EU Structural Funds. The annual survey undertaken by NEO of 7966 respondents in 2006 makes the Welsh GEM data one of the most reliable in the world, making it possible to conduct a far more detailed examination of the specific framework conditions that influence entrepreneurial activity.

According to the authors of the report, Professors Dylan Jones-Evans and David Brooksbank, entrepreneurial activity amongst working age adults in Wales in 2006 was measured at 5.5 per cent, a rise from 5.3 per cent in 2005 and identical to the figure recorded in 2004. This equates to approximately 98,500 adults in Wales aged between 18 and 64 who are actively participating in the early stages of entrepreneurship.
